About our cause
Swindon Downs Syndrome Group are here from the moment you discover your child has Down’s syndrome right through to adulthood.
We need your help so we can continue to offer and even expand our service!
We have been supporting people with Down’s syndrome, and their families since the Group was founded in 1984. We now have over 100 members who range from newborn babies to adults with Down’s syndrome, their parents, carers and supporters in the local community.
We work hard to raise awareness of the work we do to support people with Down’s syndrome, providing information, help and activities to them and their families. Our purpose is to help people with Down’s syndrome to have the same opportunities as everyone else.
Each year the Swindon Down’s Syndrome Group raises money to fund speech and language groups for young people aged between 3 and 18, 18+ within the group. The speech and language sessions are open to all young people with Down’s syndrome who live or are educated in the SN postcode and surrounding area and who have been members of the group for more than six months. Our sessions are run in addition to the statutory provision provided by the Primary Care Trust.
The aim of the SALT groups is to give our young people the opportunity to develop and practice their speech and language skills in a structured and fun environment. Most sessions run weekly in school term time. We develop skills such as understanding, sentence building, sound recognition and production, listening skills, attention and memory skills and conversational/interaction skills.
All therapy sessions are delivered online through Mable Therapy. Each member is matched with a dedicated therapist who develops a personalised therapy plan
