About us
National Literacy Trust’s Swindon Stories changes the lives of disadvantaged children in Swindon through literacy. The Covid-19 outbreak prevents us from delivering our programmes face-to-face, so we are rapidly adapting our services to ensure the hardest to reach families can still access our resources.
We work in some of the most disadvantaged communities across Swindon; with families whose children are least likely to have books at home, whose parents are least likely to have the capacity and confidence to spend time reading with them and those, who on average perform least well academically, even when circumstances are ideal. These are the children at the sharp end of this pandemic who most need our help; the need for our work has never been more important.
Our initial response to school closures has been to strengthen our digital reach. We have launched Family Zone, a free online resource with exciting literacy activities to help parents and carers engage with children at home, whilst also benefiting their reading, writing and language development. To connect with local families we have also created a local Facebook page to share useful content from the Family Zone, alongside ideas, resources and activities to support the development of children’s literacy skills at home.
This is a very challenging and anxious time for families; with your help we can reach disadvantaged children with resources to spark joy and offer so much value during this crisis.
Thank you for your support and good luck!
